Own Your Mess!

Let’s face it. We all have messes, the vast majority of which we’ve created ourselves.

But the first step in moving them to successes is owning them.

Truly, your friends, family, colleagues, team members—they all know your messes. They talk about them, complain about them, and lament about them. Don’t be shocked—it’s true for all of us. Don’t feel violated; just embrace the truth and try not to be the very last person who acknowledges your own messes. To quote a dear friend, Rebecca Hession (now this is deep so get ready), “You think they don’t know. They do.”

So own your messes. I’m convinced from traveling the nation the past few weeks speaking on my new book Management Mess to Leadership Success that a key (if not the key) leadership competency of the coming age is vulnerability. That means being secure, confident, and humble enough to truly own your messes and then exercising the discipline to move them to successes.

Take a minute and look at this list of 30 challenges. Put them into categories of either mess or success by scoring them 1-10 (1 being an utter mess and 10 being a massive success). Even better, print this off and assess yourself. Want a real ego enema? Print off a second copy for someone you trust, have them rank you, and then talk about your next steps together. Might as well print a third copy—they’ll want the same insight from you, as well.

Need to print a fourth copy? Time to buy the book and bring me into your organization for a speech!
