Find Your Unique Story


Some say that everything viable has already been invented and that every significant idea has already been thought of. Likely those words will be eaten – sooner rather than later. Smart people tend to make pronouncements. Wise people tend not to.

Dorie Clark shares a superb insight within the seams of these two haphazard pronouncements.  

“Look for the stories that no one is telling – or the ones that haven’t been discovered yet.”

This interview with Dorie came at precisely the right time for me.

I’ve been authoring a few books for FranklinCovey, one launching in June 2019 and the second in October 2019. Both are focused on leadership topics. I know what you’re thinking. Does the world need another leadership book? Yep. There will be thousands of new books on leadership in the coming decade – brace yourself. And cookbooks. Diet books. Exercise books. Books that build on every significant focus of our lives, personally and professionally.

I’ve been pondering my own unique voice on leadership for some time. What do I have to offer that nobody else already has? How does another leadership book help anyone? Who specifically? I’ve been working through this narrowing of voice, message, and audience for the better part of a year. I found it. Dorie helped me ask the right questions of myself, and it was surprisingly helpful.

I think the story no one is telling in leadership is that it is in fact not for everyone. It can truly be brutal and is often less rewarding than most academics and authors will tell us. Leadership is hard. 

It’s been really hard for me. And I have 20+ years of “practice.” I’m the guy who learns stuff the hard way. Two steps forward, one (or three) steps back — the proverbial bull in a china shop. I want to make it safe for people like me to admit it’s hard and have a coach rooting for them on the sidelines.

The first book I’ve authored is titled: Management Mess to Leadership Success. It’s a collection of raw, blush-worthy stories built around 30 specific leadership challenges that we all face, some more of a mess – others a success. I’m the leadership expert for the tentative leader, the square peg in the round hole, the rising leader who feels crushed by it and scared to death.

Let me clarify - I do find some enjoyment and validation in being a leader. I’ve been able to literally change people’s lives for the better. Build careers, confidences, 401K’s. If I didn’t enjoy the struggle, I would step aside, and if I wasn’t any good, I suspect I would have been moved aside.

My story on leadership draws from my own journey, my own struggle, my own successes. It’s for the unfiltered person who needs some support and validation that this is in fact hard and can also be worth it.
