Confront Reality

FranklinCovey Content Team

There are times when the truth is painful or hard to hear. In those moments, we tend to protect ourselves by ignoring the truth, but Stephen R. Covey once said "...Real integrity is loyalty. You want your doctor to tell you the truth, even if you don't want to hear it."

There are many instances when it would be easier to neglect the truth.

Take issues head-on, especially the "undiscussables." Acknowledge the unsaid and address the tough stuff directly. You can do this by asking those around you to "talk straight" to you or say "let's get real." This way you will never be confused by the actual circumstances of a situation or project.

Leading a team requires a different skillset than working as an individual contributor. To succeed in the face of new challenges, first-level leaders need to shift how they think and act. Download our latest guide and develop your people into a high-performing team.
