The Best Time for Feedback

Feedback is an essential element of effective coaching and a major tool when it comes to developing your team. Learn to discern when it’s needed and when you should reserve comment.

Ask yourself whether the person is doing something that needs correcting, or if they are just doing something differently than you would. This distinction can make a big difference. Don't allow your personal biases of how things should be done get in the way of effective work.

Once you have identified a negative behavior, discuss the correction with courage and consideration with that person. Ask for time at the end of your 1-on-1 or set up a separate meeting to talk about your concerns. In these meetings, be sure to share your gratitude for their work and your intent on helping them be the best they can be. 

If you make a habit of giving effective feedback, your team will learn to expect it. Chances are they’ll develop faster, too.
